Moonlight (Clair de Lune)

USA, 2018, 5 Minutes

1920px--Moonlight_(Clair_de_Lune).webm.jpg

This visualization attempts to capture the mood of Claude Debussy's best-known composition, Clair de Lune (moonlight in French), published in 1905.  Clair is quiet, contemplative, and slightly melancholy, evoking the feeling of a solitary walk through a moonlit garden. The viewer follows the Sun throughout a lunar day, seeing sunrises and then sunsets over prominent features on the Moon.

The visualization was created as part of a celebration of NASA's 60th anniversary, using a digital 3D model of the Moon built from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter global elevation maps and image mosaics. The lighting is derived from actual Sun angles during lunar days in 2018.

Negative Space

France, 2017, 5 Minutes

A poignant stop-motion work about a father and son bonding over the shared ritual of suitcase packing for his frequent business trips. The directors resonated with the idea of ritualized connection, this thing that people connect through, and not speak directly about emotion. Therefore, the clothes are more animated and vibrant-looking than the father and son. They move, fold, or slither elegantly like characters.
